Entitlement
There was probably a time I felt entitled, owed, just and justified. It was probably when I was much younger because I hear younger people say things like, I didn't ask to be born. From my current perspective the jury is still out on that one. Perhaps we all asked to be born and then promptly forgot about the request. That would explain a great deal. Interesting but not the point. To be accurate, when I do feel entitled I remind myself what a crock of crap that whole mental position is. Encounters with the entitled are never pleasant. When someone lives in such a lofty spot they have many requirements of others. You are an other. Today I found myself one of the others. It was time for me to go to the grocery to pick up a few things. Recently I've changed grocery stores because of fresher, and more varied organic produce. Unfortunately it is in a rather snooty town brimming with the rich and famous. Beautiful homes, expensive cars, all the best shops with prices to match. When you've got money, no matter how you got it, it's easy to feel entitled because the world is generally looking for a way to get some of it. It's positively hilarious and sad to realize the depths to which we will stoop to ingratiate ourselves with the rich and famous in the hope of having some of it rub off on us, giving our dun lives a temporary sparkle.A well coiffed and smartly dressed woman approached me in the produce section of the grocery. She had the hint of a smile as if she recognized me. I didn't know her so I smiled politely and briefly and went on my way. She came up behind me and said, I'm the lady you wouldn't let merge. I must have looked puzzled. On the road . . . you wouldn't let me merge. Then I remembered being stuck behind a car doing about twenty miles per hour under the speed limit. When I finally got a chance to pass her she sped up and began to merge into the side of the car. I figured she was happy enough to mosey along before there was no need to get stuck behind her again. The light must have dawned on my face because she said, in a rather indignant manner, What was that about? I could tell by her tone there was no way this could end well so I said, I didn't think you knew what you were doing. Oops. That was the trigger. She flared back, I knew what I was doing! You're something else. Stupidly I said, And you're special? That was dumb but it was already out of my mouth. She turned on her heel in a huff saying, Yes, I am special. Well, once you start being dumb it's hard to stop isn't it? I said, You think so.
Now we're here and I'm thinking of how we feel entitled. I live in snootyville and drive a snooty German car and live in a big, snooty house and buy my clothes a the snooty designer store and have my snooty hair coiffed at Jacques Penné so I'm entitled to merge whenever I damned well please and you'd better remember that! Meh. Whatever. The way I figure it is our cars and money; clothes and hair; houses and social clubs don't really entitle us. If they did she should have been pleased to not have been allowed to merge. She was driving a snooty VW something or other that wasn't a bug and I was driving a Mercedes. As I recall a friend of mine, who was stationed in Germany, telling me of a Mercedes Benz commercial he saw there that announced: Mercedes Benz. The only car in the world with a built in right of way. If I had it to do again I still wouldn't want to be stuck behind her for a few more miles. She really didn't look like she knew what she was doing. I looked for her in the store and never did see her again. That's when it dawned on me that she had followed me into the store just to tell me how entitled she was. Yawn.

You know, I view entitlement in much the same yet opposite way as I view deserve. I've found that in life, so many folks truly believe that they are entitled to this, that and the other. Especially the other! Yet when we look at situations and think on them logically, often we're left with the simple truth of, "Gosh, he or she didn't deserve that." Feelings of entitlement are sad trumped up cartloads of manure. And if we all got what we deserved, well the world would be a much different place and I doubt that some of us, myself included, would find it to be more favorable.
I really really wish I could have been there to watch that event unfold... I laughed pretty hard just reading it. Does that make me a bad person? Oh well. *smile*
@Timantec_II -
Hell yes you're a bad person! Takes one to know one. I didn't mention that when she walked away her ass squeaked. Well, that's what I thought I heard anyway. Deserve? Deserve!? We all get what we deserve, Timmy. We simply don't understand how because we don't know who we are.
@James -
I'll certainly not argue the point that we don't know who we are. I'm hard pressed these days to recognize anything remotely familiar about myself.
oh my gosh, james, that is hilarious, infuriating, and to the point ALL AT THE SAME TIME. jaques penne especially cracked me up. well that and the part about built in right-of-way.
@Smarticus -
Happy to bring some laughter into your life, Smarty. I found it amusing and incredible at the same time.
geesh she actually followed you...that is one lady very full of herself...I'm glad you gave her what for...she asked for it she got it toyota, I know it was a VW...now you know why she was driving so slow...she had no place to go. So not only did she get what she deserved, you gave her a place to go...follow that car....lmao...what a very strange woman...hugs, Sassy, p.s.: you can have my number
wink...
We have those types here too. (Both of them!
)The difference in here and Cali is that here, while she was in your face in the store, her cousin/husband/bro Bubba would be beating the crap out of your car in the parking lot.
(You remind me of me, gotta have that last word, even if it kills ya.)
I am highly amused by this. I'm not really sure what I would do if someone followed me just to confront me over not allowing them to merge. I'm not really sure that anyone here in the land of cows & corn would even do such a thing. (Not that we don't have our share of those believing that they are entitled... it's just... people are, generally speaking, more polite about it. Or at least not quite so forward.)
At any rate... I love when people tell me they're special. I usually reply with something like... yes and you have your own Olympics and everything!

Full of herself is what I thought too. Though I said too much we all know how the thoughts pour in after about what we should have said. LOL! I thought about saying, Get over yourself, woman! I'm glad I didn't. I said way too much already but have decided that it's not worth more thought so I'll just mark it up to a life lesson for me and for her too if she wants it.
@warweasel -
LOL! That's priceless! I'm glad I didn't know that one when I had my close encounter of the fourth kind. That might have been too much temptation for my itty-bitty will to handle.
@moniet -
There are places in California like that. Trailers, no dentists and lots of beer and little league. I don't go to those places.
Well she has no life. I had some well dressed stranger rapping on my passenger window asking for a ride to the next train station--even though he had just walked past the one a block back I was pointing at. I said no. And I still remember the look of surprize on his face. He seemed to have assumed I was going to give him a ride. Do I look that easy? Ha. He asked again and I said no. He was dressed better than me and I doubt if the accent was real. I imagine the real scam would have begun if he gotten in the car. I've noticed when you turn some people down--they start babbling an indignant guilt trip routine but I tuned him by that point.
Organic places are rather snooty and over priced--unfortunately. DeKalb County here has an International Farmer's Market. Fresh produce, and freshly made things from all over. People very nice and courteous--and relatively inexpensive.
I love it when big pricy cars get behind me, and are upset I'm merely doing the speed limit. I don't care how much in debt they are for their flashy car--they can't go any faster than what my 92 Tempo is doing.
"tuned him out" I meant to write.
The produce was inexpensive--I don't know if the people were or not. I really do proofread-but still--haha--
James, How I have missed reading you. Just spent the last hour catching up. LOL I let life's ups and downs get the best of me and stayed away for a while. I am so happy to be back and reading my friends. Got me a grand baby on the way very excited. Just returned from a relaxing vacation in Punta Cana, plus got to share it with daughter and son-in-law. Work...it's just work not getting any easier and less stressful. LOL Take care of you.
I'm special too.
Gosh, lovey, you missed the oppotunity to tell her she was entitled byusing the word! Special was close...but entitled is sooooooooo much more powerful! Put it somewhere on Craigslist!People do read that and someone may know her! LOL
I was married to One Who Was/Is Entitled for 4 1/2 years. He is back in Oregon feeling even more entitled I imagine. He was the one who stole my money and left me with two small kids to raise.
@Wilshak -
The truth, Wil Carter? Yes, you look that easy. What are you telling me? You're not? I'm shocked! So nice to see you, Wil Carter. It's been too long.
@tdsdrkeyes -
Wow! What a pleasant way to start the day! Both you and Wil Carter showing up here. Thank you for remembering me. I, of course, could never forget you and have thought of you too often to enumerate. I'm happy to see you back and look forward to further communication. Con mucho cariño, amiga mia.
@mezamashii -
Of course you are, dear. Just like everyone else. I salute your specialness with gratitude and reverence.
@winniezpoo -
Oh dear, no. She's a fading memory now. I've moved on to much better, nicer things about which to think. Old friends have visited and I'm all aglow with love for them. Love really does cover a multitude of sins. Even mine!
You always, always make me smile. I need to smile right now,too. HUGS
oops, forgot to say my ex was the entitlement issue in my life. Through months and even years of research, discovered his issue was NPD...Narcissistic Personality Disorder. My work in it was making sure I didn't end up attracting another one just like him!
@winniezpoo -
Yikes! Then you need to get back to the drawing board. I'm sure I've got NPD. I just must have it. Everything is all about me all the time! *smile* Keep smiling and consider yourself warmly and strongly hugged. As they say in el español, un abrazo fuerte!
Wow...
That was the part of Carlsbad I didn't like, the snob factor.
I find entitlement rife within the people with whom I work. Some patients/people, feel that they are entitled to have their needs met, I must get them in with the doctor at the exact moment when they want it. Then there are the times I feel I am entitled to be treated with a little more respect than I am receiving. Why? Because I'm the Nurse, that's why. Sometimes I think I'm where I am right now to learn that I am not entitled to be treated with respect and awe of my ways as a nurse. It does seem to get worse when I am less aware of being grateful for the work I have and the people in my life and day who do treat me with respect (but not awe). In reading this over, I definitely have some issues. *snort* there's a news flash. Blessings abound
I'm sorry but I laughed so doggone hard at the vision of Ms. Snooty being put in her place. "You think so".
When you first started speaking about entitled I thought maybe you were going to explain the lady who thought she was entitled to own a chimp.
@epeemom -
It's always good to have a little laugh at our own expense. That in itself is freeing.
@BLB -
I don't know about the lady who thought she was entitled to own a chimp. What I do know is I didn't want to be Ms. Snooty's chimp. *smile*
Talk about insecurity gone crazy...this "lady" has it big time!
I got in the habit of wearing a cap a lot when I worked in the garden center--partly to protect my face from the sun, and partly to hide my face from people. Plus it's colder more of the time in Indiana too. Lately I've been trying to be more open and leave the cap off--but I seem to attract more random idiocy when I do. I usually have a blank James Stewart smile like when he played Edward P Dowd (is that the right name?)in the movie Harvey--but like I tell people--half the time it doesn't mean anything--I just figure it's the preferable mask for me to wear.
As to whether I'm easy or not depends on who's asking?
@Wilshak -
Silly man! I'm not asking I'm opining.
Screams of laughter~~~~~~~~~ That made my day... probably a tourist! nothing else to do and no one to love her.. HAHAHAHAaaaaa
Snooty off road road-rage? LOL
@rideuponthewindagain -
Exactly! It doesn't matter how much we attempt to hide or rage. We really don't like not getting our own way even in the slightest things.
She as the kids say....is a psycho bitch. I can't believe someone would go to all that trouble to have a confrontation. Meh is right.
@sean808080 -
It's a crazy world out there isn't it? *smile*
Hee hee! You have a supermarket stalker! I love the way you handled it.
This story reminds me of the time I received an invitation in my inbox--I had only weeks before moved to northern cal and a new job and I was thrilled to see the hand-addressed envelope with my name on it. I felt so betrayed when I opened it to find it was really a mandate to attend a dreadful office function. The organizers knew no one would be pleased, so they thought they would bring levity and a sense of fun to the event by making it seem like a party. How often do people smile and approach you so directly in a store--and then only to complain? Amazing. I think anything you said would have been a trigger. Although, thinking about it now, so long after the fact, what do you wish you might have said?
@ItzaRoos -
Nothing. Just a smile would have been fine. Next time. *smile*
