The parrot that bit me the other day is a bird brain. It doesn't love me because it is not capable of higher emotions. How do I know that? Because people are capable of higher emotions but instead live in the lower, coarser, heavier kinds never even visiting a higher emotion like love. The bird can talk but it can't understand what it's saying. It can't say, I'm sorry and mean it because it can't be sorry. Regret isn't in its emotional vocabulary. It may give the illusion of understanding but only to someone who wants to see it that way. And most people do want to see it that way because it helps them to have the illusion that they are human and not a machine acted upon by life and reacting without any control whatsoever. Because we could become human doesn't mean we are. Because we have the possibility of higher emotions doesn't mean we do. Because other people in history could walk on water doesn't mean it's a good idea for you to launch yourself off a boat in the middle of the Pacific thinking you're going to be able to walk home from there. Yes, it's possible the bird was afraid of something. The truth is I don't know why it bit me but what I do know about the bird rules out the anthropomorphization of its behavior patterns. I've watched this idiot bird fly away from it's safe home where it has been fed, watered and protected all its life to parts unknown and then squawk like the idiot it is to get back. I am capable of more thought than the bird. I am capable of higher thought and higher emotions than the bird. I may not manifest them very often but I can sometimes, if nothing gets in the way to prevent it. I care for the bird but I do not confuse my caring with the bird. It does not care for me. It does not feed, water and protect me. That's my job. It's job is to be a bird, not a god, not a human. It's okay with me if you don't like this. It's okay with me if you want to believe something else. I'm not saying you should believe this. It would be better to discover its reality rather than believe it and prevent any future realization.

Anthropomorphize
Oh my, that's a big one isn't it? Don't be afraid my dears. Don't run screaming in terror. We can manage this together. It's really quite simple. To anthropomorphize means to attribute human characteristics or behavior to a god, an animal, or object. You see? That wasn't so bad now was it? Actually it's something we all do every day. It comforts us and helps us to maintain the illusion we know something and are in control of our world. Let's start at the top and work our way back, shall we? We have made a god in our image. He's one of us. He gets pissed off and kills people just like we do when they don't do what we want them to do. He tells his children not to do what he does but rather to do what he says, just like we do. He seems to display the full range of emotional insanity with which mankind has been plagued for thousands of years. No wonder so many people say there is no god. If one's choice is limited to the religious cafeteria available to the majority of people no god is a somewhat sensible choice. But this is just the top of the pyramid and we've spent enough time here. Let's move down to animals, the real thrust of my intention this morning. We anthropomorphize animals, especially the animals we domesticate and with which we live. I have a friend who was raised on a farm and finds this quite annoying. It doesn't bother me so much but a recent comment has given me the opportunity to talk about this a little here. My wife and I have a number of domesticated animals with which we live. Four parrots, two cats and a dog share our domicile. Around the back yard roam five geese I feed, water and generally tend. Last month my wife came into my office crying because one of the little parrots was on the bottom of the cage not moving. Connie doesn't cry often but when she does she makes up for all the time she doesn't. If possible it's usually better to circumvent such an event. I explained to her the bird was sitting on eggs and was alive and well. She had a difficult time letting go of her perception and accepting the reality since she'd already begun to be swept away by the emotional event. It's also difficult for humans to admit they were wrong. They trusted in their perception and it was incorrect. That's unsettling. How many other perceptions did we trust that were equally incorrect? Now, my farm fed friend might have said, It's only a little bird. Get another one. But my wife is not a little bird and I don't want to get another one of those so I stood with her and pointed out the little bird's eyes were open and blinking and we watched until it moved. Eventually, reluctantly, the tears were dried and life proceeded. Why reluctantly? Well, because we imagine that our emotions make us human. We imagine our emotions are our creator and have given us life. We forget we have emotions. We think we are emotions. Then we justify this untruth with sentimentality and nostalgia. When we justify something we get to keep it no matter how much it undermines us. Our condition is such that the emotions have us. If we were well, or at least more healthy, we could have emotions. Then we might have some choice in the kinds of emotions we were having. But we're not. Now, my farm fed friend thinks he's having the emotions he wants to have when he isn't being sentimental about animals but he's just as much a machine as the rest of us. He has to feel the way he feels because that's the way the farm raised him. -

Yes, today's Post is brought to you by the letter P. Part of the downside of being Present in the moment is not knowing that tomorrow is Friday the thirteenth when you Post for the first time in over a month. Piss Poor Prior Planning? Being Present in this moment. This one and this one and now this one. It makes one rather simple minded. Depending on your goals this could be a very bad thing. Being simple minded is a relief for me. Not having to be somebody is a relief. Not having to be smart, clever, important, rich, handsome, talented or whatever else is a load off. When life throws a Party all I have to do is show up. Admittedly, showing up is a major Production if you're not used to being here. And who could be here when they're so busy Preparing to be somewhere else, someone else, something else? It's all very complicated. Hmmm, I wonder if it's even Possible to have a goal if you're being Present in the moment? Oh well, it's really not my Problem so I'm not going to expend the energy. People talk about changing your Perspective as if it was something you could do. It's not. If you could change your Perspective your whole life would be different. But I've already said you can't. At least not directly. Change of Perspective is like getting a chain up a hill. If you try to Push it up hill you have a Problem. But if you Pull it up hill it just follows you along effortlessly. Of course, the really clever People just ride it up the hill on their motorcycle. The greenies ride it up the hill on their bicycles.Perspective follows Being the way a chain follows its Puller up the hill. The hard Part then becomes, not changing your Perspective, but changing your Being. What's that? You think it's a lot easier to Pull a chain up a hill? Yes, you'll have my agreement there. It's Probably easier to Peddle it up the hill on your bicycle. One of my Parrots bit me this morning. It was the smaller one. The Timneh African Grey. He has a much smaller beak. Although it still looks and acts like a can opener. Ouch! That was a moment in which to be Present. And I was. People think Pain makes them Present. And sometimes it does. Very often when People experience Pain they check out of the moment to reside somewhere else. I stayed. Piss Poor Prior Planning again? Perhaps. All that meditation I do Prepares one for the Present moment with its Pain or Pleasure. But it Prepares one's Being, not one's Perspective. The Perspective just follows the Being up the hill. Most folks would rather just sit down somewhere with a Guinness and look at the hill. If I drank adult beverages it wouldn't make me an adult. But if I did I'd Probably drink Guinness because it's not yellow. I've been bitten by a Parrot on Friday the thirteenth! Bloody hell! After I Put the little can opener back in the cage he acted as if nothing had happened at all. Talk about being Present in the moment. He was. He went straight over to his food bowl and started to eat. That's when I realized it. He bit me because he was hungry. Is that true? What do I know? As far as I can tell everyone is making it up as they go along. That's what we do when we're not being Present in the moment. We're making it up because we don't like the Party the moment is throwing in our honor.
Pshaw you say? You think all this is just a jumble of double talk? Yes, yes, you're quite right. It's a jumble of letters and words to which only you could give any meaning. Upon what will that depend? Why, on your Perspective, of course. And that would be entirely dependent upon your level of Being. And where is your Being right now? Here! Of course you'll say it's right here right now. And it might be. Then that dog might also have gotten that pig to fly so it could get the Bush's Baked Beans recipe so it could sell it to make a lot of money and buy some dog food that didn't have rat Poison in it. There! I've Posted two days in a row. Thanks for stopping by and reading. See you around the xang . . .

When I looked up the word there was a certain, unusual sense of satisfaction accompanied by some pleasant sensations. Who knew? For once the damned dictionary and I agreed. Of course, this is no fault of the writers of the dictionary. It was one of those happy accidents happens to everyone at least once in his life. Oh well, there go the pleasant sensations. Smiling is a pleasant sensation. It's convenient because I smile a lot. It may be because I'm getting happier in my old age or perhaps I'm just addled. Whichever the case may be matters little to me. It's the happiness I enjoy and the smiling seems to accompany it. My happiness is always lurking just below the surface. It's like, forgive me Leonardo, my mouth has a kind of Mona Lisa quality. A hair trigger smile waiting to go off for no particular reason. Yes, I'm being stalked by happiness. Yesterday I answered the phone and was so happy to hear the person's voice I gushed. How uncool of me. I simply gushed like a silly child. It was so gushy he was silent for a moment before remarking on my gush. He said I was usually more business like. Oops, there goes the smile again. This morning I absent mindedly followed my naked wife around the bathroom. It was one of those strange conversations about nothing of any importance. A neutral conversation about how long we've lived in this house, how a twenty-five year roof seemed forever just fifteen years ago and now its life is more than half over. How we'll be married twenty-five years next month. She remembered, with no small amount of laughter, the guy I knew who opined, upon hearing of the wedding, our marriage wouldn't last three months. Apparently I knew him better than he knew me. He too got married shortly thereafter and, you guessed it, his marriage, about which I had no opinion, lasted about three months. I'd thought about him recently and forgot to look up his name on the internet to see if I could find him. I just looked. Nothing. This diminishes my happiness not at all. I have no old friends. There are people in my present and people in my past. But I didn't mean to tell you all this. What I meant to say is boring, well, more boring than all this. Ha! I'm smiling again.
Yesterday I got an email request from a young man. It was serendipitous. So much of life is that way for me. The point is he, like so many others, is a lurker. Lurk - [ intrans. ] read communications on an electronic network without making one's presence known. Alas, due to his request he has made his presence known. I lived in the town in which he currently resides before he was born. I'm smiling. Long before he was born. He asked a couple of favors of me. I'm going to do them because I am able. Because he asked. Because life is happier when you can do favors for strangers or familiars with no regard to which they be. I wonder why I'm so happy? Someone looking from the outside might say he's happy because he lives in a big house, drives a nice car and has a wife who looks great naked or clothed. But I know lots of people live in bigger houses, drive nicer cars and have a wife and mistress who look good naked or clothed. But they're not happy. I'm not ruling out the car. It's a great car!

Doinit
No, it's not some obscure language. It's the common bastardization of our own (borrowed) language. Right. English isn't ours. Of course, we could always claim to own Merkin (American). Don't look up merkin. It will show you this race of ours has always been a bit on the goofy side. I suppose since we no longer use merkins we could claim some progress. I wonder though, how the merkin merchants and craftsmen of the past fitted the little fellas? Never mind. I told you not to look it up and I know you won't because you're too lazy. Unless you're more rebellious than you are lazy. Anyway, merkins aside, let's get back to the business at hand. Doinit. I have been doinit every day since last I posted. What is the it I've been doing? Living. It takes a tremendous amount of time and energy to live life, don't you think? Probably takes more energy for some than others but everyone spends the same amount of time at it. May I add here that I've been doinit quite happily? Would you like a quick update? Shouldn't take long as only the interesting points will be mentioned. Interesting to whom? Good question.Got a new computer and display (monitor for those unfamiliar with Apple). Added four 500GB hard drives. Let me tell you, that's a lot of formatting. Gave my previously owned computer to my wife. Everything with my change went so smoothly it was frightening. But then when I tried to take her stuff off the older computer and put it on the newer, previously owned computer I realized that the law of accident was indeed alive and well. What a nightmare. Of course it was only a nightmare in comparison with how easily everything went with mine. I turned the new computer on and it said, Welcome, in several languages. Asked me to pick one I liked. I did. Asked me if I had an older computer from which I wanted to get information. I said yes and it told me to plug one end of a firewire cable into the old machine, the other into the new machine and restart the old machine while holding down the T key. Then it told me how long it would take and did it. That was it. It was done and done right the first and only time. I was amazed and elated. No wonder Real Men don't use Macs. They don't shave either. They hammer the hairs in and bite them off on the inside.
There's also a new video game in my life. Final Fantasy XII has claimed my xanga time. Buddy Love is alive and well. I'm still Podcasting and planning on expanding to Video Podcasting in the not too distant future. That may explain the new computer and all the disk space. The Podcasting thing is going better than I ever thought it would. There's a steady and growing base of listeners. It will be a year
this coming June since I started. Wow! That long? Two Podcasts a week for nearly a year. That takes some time. Though I do have excellent help from two other people. One provides photos for the Phat Podcast and the other maintains the website and updates the weekly podcasts. Why do video? You know, I don't know. It's not that I think I'm interesting enough to watch. Truth is I don't think I'm interesting enough to have anyone listen, but the material is good and that makes up for my falling shorts. *smile* Yes, I've tried suspenders. All this blithering just to let you know I'm alive and well. Happy and productive. Yeah, there are other things going on in my life but this is enough. Thanks for reading, being interested, commenting and sharing the planet with me. Be happy. I am. Have I told you lately that I love you? No, of course not. I haven't been around but that's one thing that hasn't changed. I love you. Why? Well, because you're there. -
Hep
For those of you either born in the South or who have lived there any amount of time no explanation of the title will be necessary. Our other readers, however, may need some. Don't fret my fried chicken eatin' friends I'll give it to them directly. Having lived a number of years in various parts of the South, and I don't mean Southern California, there are a number of charming idioms and phrases I've come to love and respect. One of them is being carried. Your neighbor, in the South, doesn't give you a ride to the grocery store. They carry you down to the Winn-Dixie or Piggly Wiggly to fetch some vittles (an archaic variant spelling of victuals). Apart from the abomination of slavery the loss of America's Southern Culture is tragic. Damned Yankees! Yes, I was born and raised in New Jersey but I have roughly loved the Old South shortly after my first visit across the Mason-Dixon line. Not to leave anyone who doesn't know about what I'm talking in the dark any longer hep is the Southern way of saying help.It has been brought to my attention, on a few occasions, that people have been listening to James' World Podcasts while sitting at the computer. Some folks even have iPods or other MP3 players but have not figured out how to get the Podcasts onto those devices so they could listen on the go, as it were. Others haven't been able to figure out how to download a Podcast to their computer so they could burn it onto a CD and listen in the car or in some other place with a CD player. While I applaud the perseverance necessary to sit through forty minutes of recorded material I also understand that no speaker I know is that engaging and interesting. What this all boils down to is hep. Hep is now here in the form of a technical instructions page. Here's the link if you can't wait. Otherwise there is a link on the Lite and Phat Podcast pages. It's listed as Technical Help across from the Subscribe button. The guy who did the page did a wonderful job. The photographer who provided the picture for the page's banner as well as the photos for each Phat Podcast has consistently amazed me. This is the true power of team work made manifest. They bring such fresh perspectives and wonderful ideas that add to the project in ways one person couldn't.
The fact I haven't been around much is not due to anything other than I haven't had much to say here. It seems to me we'd all be better off if when we didn't have anything to say we simply didn't. But that's not going to happen in this life so I'll practice what I preach and see you back here when I've got something to say. Y'all come back now, ya hear!?

Personally
It used to be, not too terribly long ago (sometimes as often as five minutes ago) that I would take it personally when someone took something I'd written or said personally. Of course, if I meant it personally I'd only take it personally about half the time because I lied about it not being meant personally. Let's face it, when someone tees up with, Now don't take this personally . . . it can dent the armor of the bravest of us. Well, yes, I know that brave and armor don't necessarily go together. It could be argued the more armor you wear the more of a coward you are but I'm not going to argue that point because I don't want anyone reading this to take it personally. But as I write this I find a contradiction in me. If someone takes something I've written or said personally, in a good way, that's okay. It's only when they get upset with me that it's not okay. This quite effectively translates to, it's not okay for anyone in the whole world to ever be upset with me. Or what? Or I'll be upset? Get my feelings hurt? Take my revenge? Make them sorry? What exactly? My wife used to like to say, Oh, so you're going to pout? That would really turn the screw. Then one day I saw it. I saw myself pouting. It wasn't as funny then as it is now because I was much closer to it, more identified with it. I still pout sometimes but it's pretty funny the moment I see it. I can stop it now.Once upon a time I saw Bob Newhart do a skit where he was a psychiatrist who had a patient came to him with phobias. He asked her to write her worst fear on a piece of paper and give it to him. He'd advertised he was able to cure anything in five minutes. The person would tell their problem and he'd say, Stop that! They'd say, What? And he'd say, Stop doing that. The punch line to the skit was that he'd take out the piece of paper and read the patient's worst fear and threaten to do that to them if they didn't stop the behavior. If that's not funny it's because you had to be there. I'm not there so it's not that funny to me now. But it does illustrate my point. M
any times we can't do what we need to do even when we want to do it. Depressed? Stop it. Just stop it. We don't know how. If thinking happy thoughts worked no one who worked at Disneyland or the Comedy Store would ever be depressed. The drug companies would have to hire people to take political office so they could stress out the rest of us to increase their bottom line profits.I'm an optimist. It's true not everyone knows that about me. Some folks think because I have the ability to see the peeling paint that I'm a pessimist. But they're wrong. They're wrong because they can't see they are the pessimists not I. They can't see they don't have the courage to face the daunting task of scraping away the peeling paint before putting on a fresh coat. They'd much rather slap a coat of paint right over the holes, cracks and peeling without all the work. My Dad worked at the Philadelphia Naval Base when I was growing up. He was in charge of the paint shop and getting the submarines painted. He knew paint and painting and even invented a paint to be used on the slick decks of wet submarines when they surfaced so the men walking on them wouldn't slide overboard. I learned from my Dad that preparation was the biggest part of painting. If the surface was properly prepared and a good primer was applied the paint would last many times longer. That wisdom has made me an optimist. Yes, I see humanity for what it is. A sore mass of broken machines breaking things around them as a result of their condition. All this without knowing what they've done most of the time. With the courage to assess the task and the know how to prepare the project I am filled with an abiding optimism because I know what's possible for a man who is willing to work.

People
Exactly when I accepted the fact I like people isn't clear to me. What is clear is how much I resisted the concept. That was after I stripped away all the balloon juice about liking people. You know, we're supposed to like people. If we don't we're antisocial or something else we shouldn't be. The thing is that people can be very hurtful. Hanging out with them is too often like running around naked in a room full of people wearing medieval suits of armor. They don't really have to do anything to hurt you in a situation like that. In a sense, we're all running around, to varying degrees, in medieval suits of armor. We learned early in life that people hurt other people and that we're a people. Not the kind that hurt other people but the kind that get hurt. If we hurt someone else it's rarely because we were intentionally hurtful. One of the exceptions is when we feel attacked and we are defending ourselves. Then there are the perpetually wounded. They were wounded somewhere in life and now find the best defense is a good offense. Many of my early years were spent in that frame of mind. Not very much fun for the few who were brave enough or concerned enough to approach the angry young man. I was like a dog had been hit by a car. When you go to help the dog you need to be very careful of the end with the teeth because it's in pain and can't distinguish from where the pain is coming. So it has a tendency to bite anything comes near or unintentionally causes it more pain. But there were a handful of brave souls over the years who put their hearts on the line and reached out to me when I needed it most. Today I remember each of their faces and names with gratitude, honor and respect.Life has become a pay it forward proposition for me. So much was given to me. So many people took the formidable risk of loving me when I was positively unlovable. More often than not, I was unable to respond in a way that was worthy of their efforts. These days I remember that when dealing with particularly noxious individuals. Unfortunately, I haven't always had that perspective. It's good to remember from whence one has come. It's healthy to see we have a dark and deadly side we keep hidden from ourselves because it doesn't harmonize with the better pictures we like to keep of us. Yes, it takes some courage to do that but it's well worth the effort if you've seen enough emotional bloodshed in your time on the planet. Some folks aren't there yet. Some may never get there, sadly. But some are ready to put away their suits of armor or at least take off a few of the pieces to test life without all the protection. There are bits of the suit I've been able to retire and there are other parts I still drag out automatically in difficult situations. Today it's more of a conscious effort not to raise the shield. But I'm so grateful for the awareness that there is a better way. I'm happy I've let my sword rust through disuse.
It's been a hell of a battle at times. Me against the world. But these days I'm enjoying people. The progress they make when they put forth the right kind of effort inspires me. Having traveled a bit of the course thus far I've become process oriented. It's familiar to me so I recognize the steps and stages when others are in the same place. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to be able to provide what may be the boost someone needs at just the right time and place. Not only that but it helps to keep me mindful of my debt to those who have gone before me. Those who took the risk of loving me. Those who drew near the wounded animal to bind up the wounds and pour the healing balm of love on the raw parts. None of this means I don't see what absolute morons people can be. How vicious and stupid we can behave when things don't go the way we think they should or as we expected. It sure is nice to be able to step back and see the bigger picture though. To be able to see I've done the same things as blindly as they now react to their pain and frustration. I'm afraid there's no help for it. I like people in spite of us.

Six
Yes. That's six, the number between five and seven. The reason I mention this is because I've been reading around xanga this morning. After my travels I thought it was a very real danger someone might think I was going to talk about sex. That would be weird. But not nearly as weird as the message I got this morning saying, "You have been tagged to list six weird things about yourself in a blog post." At first I thought the messenger rather impertinent. Not meaning he wasn't showing proper respect. I mean it in the more formal sense of the word: not pertinent to a particular matter; irrelevant. Of what possible interest could anything about me, personally, be? Honestly, my mind would not wrap around the idea of six weird things about me. First of all, there's nothing whatever weird about me. Everything about me, no matter how weird it might be in actuality, seems quite normal to me. If it wasn't I'd change it. So, I looked up the word and found some things about which I might be able to generate some interest on my own part. Certainly this is supposed to be a light hearted kind of xanga thing. Weirdly, that's not my usual style and in fact I find very little value in something like that if it is the main reason for the essay. I'd much rather have something light hearted be ejaculated (and I said I wasn't going to talk about sex) in the process of exploring a subject has captured my imagination. The word weird comes from the Old English, wyrd meaning destiny (
the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future) and has an archaic Scottish usage as a noun meaning a person's destiny. It originally meant having the power to control destiny. Now I'm interested. But when I asked the messenger, Only six? He wrote back with, Well, and the first couple should be pretty obvious. Yes, only 6. Must I mention here this seemed even more odd to me? If it hadn't been vexations sending the messages I doubt I would have replied at all. Apparently someone else would have a much easier time writing six weird things about me than I. But lately I've been thinking about my destiny. Yes, I consider I have a destiny. I mean by that something I need to do in this life more than certain events that need to happen. There are a few events I think needed to happen in my life. Events I could not avoid. Having a leg amputated forty years ago springs to mind as one of them. The parents I got this time round would be another. These are things I would not change had I the power to do so. These are things I have already changed because I developed the power to do so. It seems to me many of us may develop the power to control our destiny. It's not so much a power to change the future as it is a power to change the past. Of course, once we've changed the past we've also altered the present which in turn changes the course of the future. Most have the potential to control what will happen in the future, to some degree, by what he does in the present. But the power to change the past is much more appealing because it not only changes the past but also the present and future. It seems it takes much more thought and practice to change the past than to change the present. After all, the present is pretty much determined by the past. I mean today's present was yesterday's future. The problem with the past is it's not the present any more so we can't do something in it as easily as we can now. Why? Well, because, in spite of where we imagine we are most of the time, we are actually in the present. The past is a place we visit only in our minds and we do that in the present. But time is not what it appears to be to most of us. We see it as a line that stretches from some point in the past to some point in the future and we are on it at some point we call the present. But a long piece of string like that can be wound up, as it were, into a ball. This kind of understanding of time opens many different levels of meaning as well as corresponding possibilities. Pretty exciting stuff to me. Yeah, that's weird. Now, if you've had your miner's hat on and the light at the top of it switched on you've been able to find at least six weird things about me in these three paragraphs. Happy now? I am.

Alchemy
It would be a mistake to conclude that because I search within my own being for greater compassion that I am unaware of the many difficult decisions facing cognitive beings today. I am painfully aware of the potential for horrendous evil inherent in our current condition. There is a story of a Buddhist monk who killed a notorious murderer of the day. The monk postulated that by taking the life of the murderer he was saving the hundreds of lives the murderer would surely have taken. Though I have the benefit of the practice of Vipassana and attempt to adhere to the principle of ahimsa I am also a pragmatist willing to accept the consequences of my inability to keep such principles perfectly, due to my incomplete understanding. I've also been around long enough to partially understand these principles apply not only to action but also, and perhaps more importantly, to our volition. As a proponent of the middle path I attempt to take as many points of view as I am able into consideration when addressing complex moral questions. Saddam has been executed. Perhaps it was his fate. I do not know. I will not second guess it. It is done and what's left to those of us living in the aftermath of such an event is to examine it and ourselves to see how better we might address such an event in the future. Not that anyone will be asking us what we should do. The leaders who make such decisions are little more than small cogs in a very great machine. Yet, what is all but impossible for them is quite possible for those of us able and willing to slip through the cogs of the machinery. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. And it appears to me this is little more than the mechanical repetition of our handling of other historical figures and similar situations. It seems from comments left that some are stuck in an either/or mindset. Either we have compassion and let criminals run riot or we have none and kill the evil bastards to spare the innocent. It's my experience that life is not black or white but rather black and white with many shades on either side and in between. Furthermore, I am attempting to address inner events we may have as a reaction or response to outer events, not dictate right or wrong behavior concerning those events. You are free agents. Do what you will. My chief concern is for my own internal world and how I may better understand it and arrange it so as to bring about a better level of being for myself. As we are all connected it stands to reason others could benefit from such an internal change but it is not my chief aim. The small, vengeful, negative I's that live by the law of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth insure a world of blind and toothless people. For me to lift myself above them I've got to have access to better I's within myself, better states of mind, better attitudes. Those states of mind must have a greater understanding which will give them access to higher and finer meanings connected with outer events. It's not so much what happens in the world matters as much as my reaction to it.
Largely, we are not in control of how we react because we are asleep to what lies within us. Thus, the ancient admonition: Man, know thyself. Anyone who has sincerely taken a stab at self-consciousness knows how daunting is the task. Alchemy concerns transformation but has been taken in an outer way rather than internally. True alchemy deals with the transformation of the individual from something base to something finer. Is that possible? Can an individual full of petty, hateful, vengeful and negative states be transformed into something finer, higher? If it is possible why are there relatively few examples of it manifest in our world? And won't evolution take care of that? I mean, why should we have to make effort to paddle along the river? Why can't we just flow with the current and get there eventually? I want it now. The theory is there is something finer in you but it's encrusted with the base muck of this world. To transform one must somehow contact something higher, finer and do the work necessary to make the transformation possible. The Saddam event is either fuel for individual transformation or fuel to spin our wheels in the same rut mankind has been in for millennia. The choice, if one is conscious enough to have earned a choice, is up to the individual.

Perhaps, from one perspective it was unwise of me to mention Saddam Hussein while exploring the idea of compassion. Apparently it served as a flash point for many. Another perspective might be that it gave some an opportunity to sound the idea of compassion in their own minds and hearts. A friend in Texas said, I don't necessarily disagree with you, however... I cannot find compassion for someone like Saddam. Okay. That's understandable to me. I'll bet there are a lot of people who genuinely feel that way and I don't want to leave them out of the equation. Changing the world isn't my direct goal so it's okay with me if you don't agree with what I write. You don't have
to because I don't need to change you. Therefore your agreement doesn't satisfy my aim. My primary interest is to learn to better express the ideas with which I struggle internally. You see, I want to change me. I don't want to be the person I was raised and programmed to be. Not wholly anyway. I've noticed many areas in me where big improvements could be made if I could find how to make those changes. Of course, finding how to make a change and making the change are vastly different matters. As I search for words to express to others what I find in myself I've found my understanding has deepened and taken on another dimension. Mostly, the way I thought was rather two dimensional; chocolate or vanilla? I can't change and remain the same. But where must this changes begin? Certainly not with my socks but with my thoughts. How do I change thoughts without changing my way of thinking? Chocolate or vanilla, though it has served me in life, will no longer measure up to my new goal. I need a third thing. Like strawberry.Whether or not Saddam should have been executed, where, when or how are not matters of great use to me in relation to my primary aim of changing my way of thinking. At least not at this stage of the process. But, like eating an apple, I've found eventually I need to take a bite and start to chew as swallowing whole apples is as unpleasant as dangerous. How will I find the strawberry, the new thing in the equation of chocolate or vanilla? Strawberry is neither chocolate nor vanilla but it's still a flavor. By examining chocolate and vanilla I find that a third thing arises. The idea of something like chocolate and vanilla but not either of them. To further quote the Texan on the subject of Saddam's execution, it should've been done a bit differently... not so quickly and not when it was done (on a day when no one is supposed to be executed due to a holiday or whatever). Here I have found a strawberry. She is expressing compassion for whomever might have been suffering because the day of the execution may have been poorly chosen. Is some compassion better than no compassion? From my perspective it is because it moves one in the direction of compassion and that is the direction in which I wish to travel. How much movement is needed? I don't know that. But I do know that some movement in the direction in which I wish to travel is something brings me closer to my goal. It's interesting to me that the Texan's love, compassion and tenderness are the main reasons I read about her life. Please don't labor under the false conception you must agree with me to comment here, read here or be considered my friend. Not everyone who agrees with me is my friend and not everyone who disagrees with me is not. I've spent enough time in directed thinking and self-examination to realize not every idea I express is mine. Certainly then the ideas you express are not mine. They come out of your consciousness and reflect your center of gravity. Inner change is my goal and I am not opposed, in any way, to some internal change taking place in you as a result of our interaction. It follows then that no change in you must be accepted with equal grace and poise. Reading over the comments on my last offering has been rewarding to me. Firstly because it gave me more about which to think. Secondly in order, but certainly not value, was finding there are people who have also sensed a great need for compassion on our planet and in our epoch. Further, there are some who have realized it must begin in their own hearts and minds. For those of you interested in a further treatment of the ideas related to a new way of thinking please check out the James' World Phat Podcasts numbered 024 and 026. When 030 is released it too will deal with the subject.
