  • Scary
As a rule, I don't scare easily. That doesn't mean I won't nearly jump out of my skin when I'm quietly concentrating and the dog sneaks up behind me and barks in my ear as loudly as he can. But I don't call that being scared. That's more like being startled. And I use the word in the earliest sense of its meaning. The dog barks and I jump a little. The body actually jerks or starts quickly. There's probably some explanation for it encoded in its DNA so I don't pay it a lot of mind. On the other hand, I've observed I will often get annoyed at the dog, as if it was a canine conspiracy reminiscent of a Gary Larson cartoon. What's the matter with the dog anyway? Can't he see I'm busy? Poor Buddy. He has no idea about all the requirements I place on him. Interestingly, my wife just passed through my office and went out onto our front porch. Buddy (the dog in question) went with her and the minute he set foot on the front porch he started barking wildly and loudly. Connie (the wife in question) said, Boy, you're noisy. Needless to say my ears perked up and took it all in because it was agreement. She was agreeing with me that the dog is noisy and barks a lot. The tone of her voice let me think, rightly or not, that she too gets annoyed with the dog when he barks and startles her. Agreement! Oh, how we love agreement. I love agreement. Now I am justified in feeling negative. Perfection.

But now we must come to the scary part of all this. The agreement part. I'm not the only one loves agreement. But the part of me that loves agreement isn't the part of me with which I wish to identify. It's not the best part of me. It's not the part of me I wish to follow and go with when it has ideas. It's a part of me that loves to be right, loves to justify itself, loves to make others wrong so it can feel better about itself. And wouldn't you know it? It's the part of me which is always handing out invitations to its parties. It took me a long time to realize I didn't have to accept every invitation I received. Too long. You see, I'm not a very bright person. Almost everyone I know, or have ever met in my life, is smarter than I. Hell, to balance my checkbook I still have to count on my fingers. String theory makes perfect sense to me but I can't remember six times nine when I need the right answer. So, you see, all the time I'm writing here I'm very aware of how little I know. How much I lack and how very much I would have to change to be the kind of person I could admire. Because I've lived with this knowledge for years it's not scary any longer. It's just the way it is and there's not much I can actually do about it outside my imagination.

What scares me is the consistency of some comments people leave when I write something. Like, I agree to a certain degree and I think your perspective is interesting and good to a certain point and I think we agree on a number of things. Or like this, I think people may get annoyed because they dont like or agree with what you may of said. Here's the scary part. Why would anyone want to agree with me? Of the billions of intelligent beings who have lived or currently live on this planet why would anyone waste their time and energy agreeing or disagreeing with anything I might happen to write? I am, literally, no one. Nothing on this planet has my name on it or ever will. No one on this planet owes me anything. Yet I am a debtor to hundreds of thousands of people, most of whom I've never even met. The people who grew my food, made my clothes, built the cars I've driven, carry away the waste I make, etc. I'm nobody and I've done nothing. See, the thing is, I'm really okay with being nobody.

  • ha ha james, i never agree with you!  i just sort of think you're cute!  except for that macrobiotic stuff that keeps you from eating delicious cheese--that's just real weird!

seriously you think you're nobody?  well i guess everyone is when you think about it.

PS james!  i totally saw a black snarly elegant-looking ducati 749 the other day in the supermarket parking lot and it made me think of you!

  • RYC: Um, I guess it's that agreement thing. Can't we all just......eat chocolate? ;o)

  • agreeing just to agree with you isn't my style. But there are times that what you say rings true in my being and then I can say...I agree with you or that what you say I believe the same truth (for me).

Being a nobody is my favorite thing. The more of a nobody I am the less attention that is brought my way. The less attention that is brought my way the less I feel like a fool. The less I feel like a fool the more I can pay attention to the things that I want fixed in me before my attention is brought to the other things that I need to work on.

  • To paraphrase one of E Dickinson's sappier poems:

    How dreary to be somebody.
    How public like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
    To an admiring bog.

I don't agree with you at all. You are somebody. You are you, a totally unique being of the universe as is each of your readers. But you know that already so a sarcastic bah humbug to you.

  • I like agreeing with things when I can. I decided a long time ago that it's better to look for sameness than differentness. Connectedness is what makes humans feel good... it's kind of like knowing righty tighty lefty loosey really works. We're all somebody and nobody. Being connected makes us same and makes us feel special (and, thereby unique) at the same time.
I do like the way you write. It makes me think.

  • Well, I like smarty's comment the best. I agree with her.

  • You've posted a couple of times! I wish I could sit and read both posts right now but sorry.

    I'm prining them out instead.

    Later!!!

  • Ya wanna fight instead?
The nit I'll pick to have a disagreeable fight with you is this..."Yet I am a debtor to hundreds of thousands of people, most of whom I've never even met. The people who grew my food, made my clothes, built the cars I've driven, carry away the waste I make, etc. I'm nobody and I've done nothing." OK. First of all, you (or your wife, or someone on your behalf pays taxes and buys the food, clothes, cars, bikes, and pay the bills for the rest of what you consume, so you're not REALLY in debt to the ones producing the things you use, in the physical sense. Your stuff was paid for...if not by you, then perhaps you have a debt of sorts to whoever is paying those bills. But that's not my nit. My nit is that you consider that you're nobody, yet those you'd owe a debt to seem to be thought of as 'somebody' because you owe them this imagined debt. Some of us owe you, for your time, for your patience, for listening and kicking asses when needed, all that stuff that friends do for each other. So, if you think that those you owe are 'somebody' because debts are owed, then I hate to bust your bubble, but you're also somebody.

Of course, you'll likely say that ultimately your point is that we are all nobodies, which will kill my nit, but you wanted disagreement, so there ya go. Happier now?

  • I am a nobody too and I am glad, being a somebody would involve too  much work on my part and I am lazy. But you are somebody to me, a friend!

  • Sometimes...
    I agree with you...
    Sometimes...
    I don't...
    Is that r-e-a-l-l-y matter???

  • Some days I agree not to diagree.  It saves a lot of time, energy, and fustration.  Plus to dang on old to be verbally bashing it out.

  • Dear Mr Nobody.  I love Gary Larsen.  Love love love.  My ultimate piece of unnecessary treat is the complete collection of his works - it's $300 at the local bookstore!  Anyway - I'm too scared to comment on the rest in case you agree with me. Love n stuff, TP

  • I don't mind being a nobody.  I'd like to be a nobody with more money, though... but that's not likely to happen, so I guess I'll just go on being a poor nobody.  ::shrugs::

As far as the other stuff goes... sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I don't... and sometimes I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.   ;p

  • LOL _ Nobody is an interesting aspiration.  I just finished a book called "The Four Agreements" - very interesting.  But none of them require me to agree with you.  Or agree with myself for that matter.  Probably less scary that way.

  • i love my anonymity

  • Nothing? Nobody? Hardly....and it's too funny when people agree with you...like yourself I think I'm a special kind of crazy so when someone agrees with me it makes me wonder too *G*  Very interesting post... 'Til The Next

  • Who/What/Where

  • At the risk of agreeing and/or disagreeing with you, I'll simply say that I really wish Gary Larson hadn't retired. I especially love his book The PreHistory of the Far Side because it explains some of the jokes I was too stupid to 'get' the first time around.

I'm far too timid to be anything other than a nobody. I'm ok with that.

  • Can't we agree to disagree?  I don't so much give in to agreement so much as I dislike discord and contention.  So, find it difficult to "blog" because no doubt I'll say something offensive - if to no one other than myself - disagreeable cuss that I am!

  • RYC:  I can't ever seem to decide if I'm a fatalist or just a realist.  Is there a difference?  :0)  I appreciate your comments.

  • isn't vanishing fun? no trace....

  • I'm with Nanny...lol...it would be scarey if everyone thought alike or if everyone really "got off" on not thinking alike...ohh...for the record...I think your "very" bright and you shine like a star in the night sky...have a great day...oops...forgot to take the garbage out and hear that truck acomin for my self-made waste...lol...I am indebted to him and bow with a fond respect......what a tasteless job but somebodies got to do it....huggs...Sassy

  • I think Connie and I would be great friends.
